The story of how Thrive came to be — and why we built everything around happiness
Choosing the right people development partner is one of those decisions that feels straightforward. Until it isn’t.
Get it right and your people grow, your culture shifts, your business performs better. Get it wrong and you’ve spent budget you had to fight for on a programme nobody remembers — with nothing to show the board.
The question that matters isn’t who has the best-looking proposal. It’s simpler: do these people actually know what they’re talking about? Have they been in the room you’re in?
Here’s our answer — and the story behind it…
it started with a bad coach
Dan spent the first decade of his career in media publishing — from Haymarket to IPC Media, where he became Ad Director within the Time Warner Group. When he stepped up to director level, the company gave him a coach. Standard practice. Meant to be helpful.
The coach was, to put it diplomatically, not good.
But instead of writing off coaching entirely, Dan found himself thinking about what good coaching could actually do. That single underwhelming encounter planted a seed. Combined with working under a chairman whose values didn’t align with his own, he reached a crossroads — keep climbing, or follow something that felt more like a calling.
He left. He qualified. And he started building.
Charlotte’s story
Charlotte’s route looked different but led to the same place.
After more than a decade in media – Sugar Magazine, the Guardian, Zenith – she had watched organisations get people development spectacularly right and, more often, spectacularly wrong. She was good at her job. But the corporate structure wasn’t letting her grow in the ways she wanted to.
She just hadn’t found the right vehicle yet.
The friday night that changed everything
The founding moment of Thrive arrived over a perfectly ordinary bottle of red wine. Dan had spotted an opportunity to acquire another training company. They built the pitch together. They made the case.
Spoiler alert — they didn’t win.
“We felt so deflated. But then we looked at each other and thought — why are we letting that stop us?”
— Charlotte, Co-Founder, Thrive
That failed pitch became the founding moment of Thrive as it exists today.
we’ve been in your shoes
Between us, we bring something most people development consultancies can’t offer: we’ve actually done the job. Between a Diploma in Executive Coaching, neuroscience coaching credentials, team coaching qualifications and years of senior leadership experience in media, our clients aren’t being supported by people who’ve read the book. They’re being supported by people who’ve been in the room.
We work at three levels: Leader, Team and Individual, so whether the issue is a manager who isn’t leading effectively, a team that isn’t gelling, or individuals who aren’t reaching their potential, we have a programme built for it.
It’s an approach that’s earned the trust of organisations including the BBC, HSBC and Boden. Boden, for example, involved a year’s team coaching programme with a newly formed executive team, which produced stronger collaboration, greater strategic focus, and – in the words of Boden’s People Director – ‘a real shift in the team.’
And then we found the answer
Workplace happiness wasn’t where we started. It’s where years of work eventually led us.
Programme after programme, we kept returning to the same observation: the organisations that performed better, retained their best people, and navigated difficulty with resilience all had something in common. Their people were genuinely happy at work.
Not performatively so.
Not free-fruit-on-Friday happy.
Actually, purposefully, meaningfully engaged.
The evidence backs it up: highly engaged teams are 21% more profitable, deliver 20% better sales, and see 147% higher earnings per share. Workplace happiness isn’t soft — it’s a commercial strategy.
That’s what gave us the HAPPINESS framework — nine practical ingredients distilled from real-world experience that answer the question every people leader eventually asks: where do we actually start?
- Harmonious.
- Autonomous.
- Purposeful.
- Progressive.
- Inclusive.
- Nurturing.
- Energetic.
- Safe.
- Structured.
Not aspirational values pinned to a wall. The actual building blocks of cultures where people want to show up – and businesses genuinely perform.
“Any business is only as successful as its people. If those people aren’t thriving, the business isn’t either.”
— Dan, Co-Founder, Thrive
